The Power of Plant-Based Wellness

My favorite response from people who are using our products is “This stuff really works, how did you figure it out!” They will often say it with wonder and amazement across their face, this is a moment I absolutely love.  But I can’t take credit for herbal medicine.

Back to Our Roots

The reality is I am not doing anything that hasn’t been done for centuries around the world.  Herbal medicine crosses cultures, borders and generations.  It is a part of our human heritage – isnt’ that a cool thought, our human heritage – love that!

Plants are an important tool in medicine throughout Europe, Asia, and India, and have been used since the 1800’s in conventional medicine.  But plant based medicine didn’t start there, it dates back to our first days on this planet. Think Egyptians and mummies in 30BC – that are still preserved today – those are some powerful plants!

In the early 1900s, American doctors commonly used naturopathy, homeopathy, and other holistic practices to help alleviate or combat certain ailments and diseases. Let that sink in for a minute – imagine you could go to your doctor and he would use naturopathy, homeopathy, and other holistic practices to HEAL you.  Ummm, yes please!

That’s not quite the norm today, but there is good news, in the last 5 years we have seen the highest spike in google searches for plant-based medicine.  People are sharing their desire to get well naturally, and they are sharing their success.

Better Together

A little science goes a long way in explaining why herbalism works – stick with me through this one line and then we’re done with the science.

A living plant is a complex system with hundreds of interacting chemicals, balancing each plant’s strengths– creating a greater impact than the effect of consuming isolated components. Using the whole plant or whole plant extract, like we do at Ami Wellness in our Tinctures and Herbal Oils, influences how each of the plants work.

Our concept of “Better Together” is important because each plant is offering several different ways they may work, and then the plants are working in synergy – or Harmony. For example, they may help stabilize each other, enhance each other, or modify the impact of certain elements of each other.

Why plant based wellness now?

Personally I think the pendulum will always swing, and for decades we have seen TV dinners, preservatives, OTC drugs to name a few, all pushing us away from our roots, from the earth.  I think people started to question the side effects, the imbalance and impact.

The pendulum is shifting. I see more and more people becoming educated about health, and wanting to understand the impact of what we consume and how it contributes, not only to our personal wellness but to the planet's wellness. I think some of this is driven by fear, but it’s a healthy fear of risks of getting cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure and other ailments that suspend the ability to live a longer, fuller life. Now more than ever, the interest in living a healthier lifestyle is becoming a new normal.

We have a long way to go, much of the country doesn’t know plant-based wellness exists and that is why our mission to educate people about plants is needed right now!  I think the other theme in the shift is that people no longer solely depend on traditional medicine to heal from illness - they are looking for and embracing alternatives.

I had a call with an advisor the other day, and I was talking about an idea I have and he said, whatever you do, I am sure it will be different.  I thought to myself, well it’s about as different as it was 300 centuries ago : )
